“Reach one. Teach one,” is a philosophy to which Miss Black Texas USA 2009 Andrea Jamil Hill adhered to when she taught for the Houston Independent School District. She reached many children daily as a sixth grade teacher at Patrick Henry Middle School teaching the basics of the English language. These same bright-eyed little faces were the inspiration of Andrea’s dream for the next generation. She aspired to help young girls specifically to understand what the bigger picture of life is. Andrea wanted to help the next generation reach their full potential and hopefully become the fulfillment of her platform, “Ladies of Distinction.” She felt that it was her duty and calling to help them develop knowledge that can not be found in books. It was her dream to have these future “Ladies of Distinction” realize that they are the creators of their dreams and it is up to them to attain goals that seem unreachable to others. Through public speaking, community service activities, social gatherings, peer mentoring, and educational workshops, Andrea promoted social progression in the lives of young girls. This magna cum laude graduate of Howard University loves dancing and volunteering. With affiliations in Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and Teach for America, this world traveler has trekked through South Africa, Australia, Italy, France, and Switzerland. Recognized as an International Laureate Scholar and Who’s Who Among America’s Colleges and Universities, Andrea is a native of Georgia. She recently represented Texas at the Miss Black USA Pageant in Washington, D.C. where she was named among the top 15 delegates at the national pageant. In her spare time, Andrea reads, watches movies, visits various museums and Broadway shows. Her future plans include acting in various films, soap operas, theater’s and television shows, having a Christian-based talk show on Tyler Perry Network, being a philanthropist and volunteer for girls clubs and organization across the country, motivational speaking, modeling for cosmetic and dental companies, authoring a few books, and being an educator. Ultimately and most importantly Andrea would like to do the will that God has planned for her life. Currently, Andrea Hill lives in New York City and is a first year student at the New York Conservatory for Dramatic Arts studying acting. Her life’s purpose is to enlighten minds, revitalize deferred dreams, and spread the love of Christ through the arts. She holds her faith close to her heart. Andrea is a member of World Changers Church New York. Her motto is life can be found in Phillipians 4:13.
One tough cookie is almost an understatement when speaking of Miss Black Teen Texas USA 2009 Nicole Hickl. With a second degree black belt in karate, she is one lady who should not be double-crossed. Already the two time state champion in kata and weapon, Nicole shares her zeal for karate with several middle school students for whom she serves as instructor and mentor through the Kickstart Karate Program. This is the same program that helped Nicole to truly love herself. Faced with many teenage pressures, Nicole became a victim of depression during her freshman year of high school. From her spunky attitude, it is almost impossible to imagine that she suffered with this disease. It is for this reason that she wants to help other teens who may be dealing with depression as her platform and has recently started a girl mentoring program at Dulles Middle School.
The art of karate helped Nicole to discover the importance of her life and now she shares her journey with others. As Miss Black Teen Texas USA, Nicole will continue her mission of serving as a motivational speaker and mentor for teens with depression. Her goal is to provide the help teens need and to encourage them to set and achieve goals while raising awareness of teen depression. Nicole is a 2008 graduate of Dulles High School and currently is a sophomore at the University of St. Thomas (UST). At UST Nicole is the Vice President of the Presidential Ambassadors, a Sophomore Senator, the Public Relations officer for the Health Awareness Club, a REACH Peer Educator and the Director/Founder of the Miss UST Scholarship Pageant. Nicole is also of a member of the Aero Dynamic Cheerleading squad for the Houston Aeros Hockey Team. Upon graduation she plans to become a news anchor and get involved with local politics. She enjoys volunteering with several different organizations, working out at the gym, spending time with her family, and challenging herself in academic endeavors.
